Russia - Return to Dictatorship?

It is sad to watch the reaction to peaceful demonstrations in Moscow. Scenes where police treat people with harshness, arrests etc are in sharp contrast with the openness of the Gorbachev-era. Words such as Perestroika and Glasnost were the buzz-words of the eighties and nineties.

This seems like an eternity ago when we see the Putin-era today...

Democracy can be a real nuisance for powers that be, but nonetheless, we need freedom of speech and the right to demonstrate peacefully if we want people to take an active part in politics.

We can't survive when established powers gain a monopoly on participating in political activities!

It is so sad that Russia has gone back to communism in the most dictatorial of versions, and all of it is quite probably due to the lack of openness between the East and West. The Cold War is coming back, and the safety situation worse than in recent years.

What are your thoughts, dear readers?
